Three operators run the 3-hour Bergen-Mostraumen route from two quays: Rodne Fjord Cruise and Fjordcharter Norway from Zachariasbryggen at Torget 2, and Fjord Cruise AS / Guided Fjord Tours from Borshopen at Strandkaien 13. - A fjord cruise from Bergen means a 3 to 3.5 hour round trip on a sightseeing catamaran with no overnight cabins and no going ashore. It is not a cruise ship. The largest boat in the Bergen sightseeing fleet carries 297 passengers; the boat usually on this route carries 147. A large ocean liner calling at Bergen carries over 5,000. - Bergen is Norway's busiest cruise-ship port, with 346 calls and over 680,000 cruise passengers in 2025, which is why searches for the two products collide. The port caps arrivals at four ships and 8,000 cruise passengers per day. - The route runs Bergen harbour, Byfjorden, Salhusfjorden, under the Nordhordland Bridge, Osterfjorden, Romarheimsfjorden, through the Mostraumen strait into Mofjorden, turning at the village of Mo in Modalen, Norway's second smallest municipality with about 380 people. - Mostraumen is a tidal strait about 50 to 60 metres wide at its narrowest and roughly 600 to 650 metres long. The current runs to 7 knots at its strongest. Mofjorden inside it was a freshwater lake until a flood on 14 December 1743 broke through the gravel isthmus and let the tide back in. - Mostraumen and the Osterfjord are NOT part of any UNESCO World Heritage listing. The World Heritage fjords are Geirangerfjord and Naeroyfjord, inscribed in 2005 as West Norwegian Fjords, reference 1195. They are a separate fjord system. - The boats do pass a UNESCO World Heritage site: Bryggen in Bergen, inscribed 1979, reference 59, where some 62 buildings remain. - Naeroyfjord is reachable from Bergen as a long day. Fjord Tours' own booking engine gives 9 hours 48 minutes for the cruise-first variant and 12 hours 9 minutes for the railway-first variant, from NOK 2,698 with food not included. The operator's FAQ says a round trip usually takes 9 to 14 hours. - Geirangerfjord is not a day trip from Bergen. Driving is 6 to 7 hours each way over several ferry crossings. The best public-transport arrival is 17:45 and the last same-day return leaves at 12:30. In December the journey takes over 24 hours. - Bergen is itself on a fjord. Byfjorden is 15 km long and Vagen, the harbour basin Bryggen fronts, is one of its inlets. The answer to how far Bergen is from the fjords is zero. - Dock prices for the 3-hour Mostraumen cruise in 2026: Rodne NOK 890 adult, Fjordcharter NOK 880, Fjord Cruise AS NOK 840. Children roughly half. Rodne's 2027 prices are NOK 940 adult, NOK 752 student, NOK 470 child. - It runs all year. Rodne sails three times daily in July and August, twice daily April to June and September to October, and once daily at 10:00 from November to March. One competitor runs a 17:00 departure in July and August, the only evening sailing from Bergen. - Guiding on the flagship is recorded audio in Norwegian and English, not a live guide, and reviewers report it is hard to hear out on deck. A competing operator sells a live human guide as its main difference. - There is no electric fjord cruise from Bergen as of September 2026. Rodne's hybrid MS Rygerstraum arrives in the second quarter of 2027 and will run on batteries out of Bergen harbour and through Mostraumen. The all-electric boats, Future of the Fjords and Legacy of the Fjords, run on the Naeroyfjord. - Norway requires zero direct CO2 and methane emissions from passenger ships under 10,000 gross tonnes in the five World Heritage fjords from 1 January 2026, and from ships of 10,000 gross tonnes and above from 1 January 2032. - Bergen-Florida recorded 2,495.5 mm of precipitation a year and 200.8 days with at least 1 mm on the 1991-2020 normal. December is wettest at 289.9 mm and May driest at 108.5 mm. But in 2018 it rained during only 25.8 per cent of the year's hours. - The boats sail in rain. The operator's own words are that they run every day, rain or shine, and that on rainy days the waterfalls are bigger. - Some Norwegian fjords do freeze at their innermost ends, and Mofjorden, this cruise's own turning fjord, is one of them. The operator warns that ice can force an alternative route. The open coast stays ice-free because of the North Atlantic Current. - Daylight in Bergen runs about 19 hours on 21 June, with no true darkness, and about 5 hours 45 minutes on 21 December. - The Bergen Card gives 20 per cent off the Rodne Mostraumen cruise, worth NOK 178 on a NOK 890 ticket, against a 24-hour card price of NOK 400. ## Which fjord trip from Bergen, and whether the cheap route is enough The honest baseline is that Bergen sits on a fjord already. The Kleppesto commuter boat crosses Byfjorden in 13 minutes for NOK 51, free on a Bergen Card, and gives you the city from the water. What it does not give you is a waterfall, a tidal strait, any commentary or a return timed for visitors. The 3-hour Mostraumen cruise is what the money buys: 60 km of enclosed fjord, a 50-metre strait with a 7-knot current, and a boat that noses up to a waterfall. Three operators sail it for NOK 672 to 890 and the differences are the guiding, the quay and the price, not the scenery. If what you actually want is the fjord from the postcard, no 3-hour boat goes there. Google returns questions about Viking, Norwegian Cruise Line and 'worst cruise lines' for this search because Bergen is Norway's busiest liner port, but the product searchers are looking at is a 3-hour sightseeing boat with no cabins that returns the same afternoon. - The Bergen-Mostraumen cruise is not a UNESCO fjord cruise. Mostraumen and the Osterfjord appear in no World Heritage listing. The UNESCO fjords are Geirangerfjord and Naeroyfjord, and neither is reachable on a 3-hour boat from Bergen. The cruise does sail past Bryggen, which is separately World Heritage. - 'Norwegian fjords never freeze' is wrong. The open coast is ice-free year round, but the innermost ends of several fjord arms freeze near-annually, and Mofjorden past Mostraumen is on that list. - Calling the current that warms Norway 'the Gulf Stream' is incorrect. The Gulf Stream turns into the Atlantic at 35 to 40 degrees north; the water reaching Norway arrives as the North Atlantic Current. - Bergen is the rainiest city in Europe but not the rainiest place in Europe. Crkvice in Montenegro is roughly twice as wet, and Brekke i Sogn, 85 km north of Bergen, is wetter at 3,575 mm. - Dreggekaien is not a current departure pier for the Mostraumen cruise.
