Mostraumen Fjord Safari by Premium RIB — review

An open rigid inflatable boat running close to a steep fjord wall

My verdict: the only open boat on this site, the only one that lends you gear, and the only one that will turn people away. Before anything else: it is not suitable for children under 8, for people with back problems, or for wheelchair users. If any of that applies to someone in your party, stop here and read one of the catamaran reviews instead, because no amount of enthusiasm about the ride makes those exclusions negotiable. For everyone else it is the fastest, wettest and most physical way to see exactly the same fjord, and the rating sits on the smallest sample here.

Who cannot goNot suitable for children under 8, people with back problems, or wheelchair users. That is the operator’s own restriction and it is the single most important thing on this page.

The gear is the reason this works in Bergen

This is the one boat on the site that hands you a flotation suit, goggles, gloves and a hat, and that single fact changes the arithmetic of an open boat in a city where Bergen–Florida recorded 200.8 days a year with at least 1 mm of rain on the 1991–2020 normal. Elizabeth, 26 May 2026: “We went on a very rainy windy and cold day and still had fun!” She could write that because she was dressed for it by the operator rather than by her suitcase. Nowhere else in Bergen is that true — none of the catamaran operators lends blankets or ponchos, whatever you may have read. What to bring for each kind of boat.

Allow 15 to 20 minutes before departure to get into the suit. That is not padding; it is the actual gearing-up time and it is why the arrival instruction is stricter here than on the catamarans.

What the 169 reviewers say, and what 169 means

Jackie, 16 August 2026: “Absolutely stunning scenery and very fun ride. Can’t believe how close we got to the fjord walls.” Chris, 1 June 2026: “We were only 2 of 4 people which made it personable and the ride was amazing!” And Jarod, 18 June 2026, gives the clearest statement of who this is for that I have read on any of the six listings: “Lots of fun. Fast. Great for teenagers who don’t want to sit in a boat all day.” That is the product. It is not a scenic cruise with a faster engine, it is a ride.

Now the caveat I owe you. 169 ratings is the thinnest sample on this site by a long way — the most-booked cruise here carries 10,168. A 4.8 from 169 is a good sign, not a settled fact, and a handful of poor months would move it in a way they could not move the flagship. Read it as encouraging rather than as proof. How I read the ratings across all six listings.

Same water, different price

It is worth saying plainly that this costs more than twice the cheapest ticket to the same strait. The Mostraumen narrows are 50 to 60 metres wide at the tightest point with a current running to 7 knots at its strongest, and that is what it is from any deck. What the RIB buys is proximity, speed and weather on your face, and a shorter day at about two and a half hours rather than three to three and a half. Whether that is worth the difference is a question about what you enjoy, not about what you will see. The whole price ladder, from the NOK 51 commuter boat upwards.

What works

  • Flotation suit, goggles, gloves and hat provided — the only boat here that lends gear
  • About 2.5 hours, the shortest trip to Mostraumen on this site
  • A reviewer reports going out on a cold, wet, windy day and still enjoying it
  • Captain commentary at the key points rather than a recording throughout
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before

Worth knowing

  • Excludes children under 8, people with back problems and wheelchair users
  • 169 ratings is the smallest sample here by a wide margin
  • More than twice the price of the cheapest ticket to the identical strait

Insider tip

If you are bringing teenagers who visibly do not want to spend three hours sitting down, this is the listing that solves your afternoon. A reviewer says so almost word for word, and it is the most useful sentence on the page.

Picking a boat? The three Mostraumen cruises sail the same water. What differs is the guiding, the price and which quay you walk to.

Compare all six

Who it suits

Families with older children, anyone who would rather be moving than seated, and anyone who has done the catamaran before and wants the same fjord from a metre above the water. It suits nobody in the excluded groups, and it suits nobody hoping for a heated cabin and a waffle. For that, the flagship review is the other end of the same route. And if what you actually want is the World Heritage fjord, that is a whole day and a different page.

Frequently asked questions

Who cannot go on the RIB?

Children under 8, people with back problems and wheelchair users are all excluded by the operator. There is no way around it and no discretion at the quay. If that rules out someone in your group, the enclosed catamarans take the same route. The four short cruises compared.

What do I need to wear?

Less than you would think, because this is the one boat in Bergen that lends you gear: a flotation suit, goggles, gloves and a hat are provided, which is why a reviewer could enjoy a cold, wet, windy day out. Allow 15 to 20 minutes before departure to get into it. What to wear on each kind of boat.

Is a 4.8 rating from 169 reviews reliable?

It is a good sign rather than a settled score. For comparison, the most-booked cruise on this site rests on more than ten thousand ratings, so a few bad months would move this average and could not move that one. How I read the ratings across all six listings.
