Because Bergen is Norway’s busiest liner port and the search term does not distinguish. Of the 66 People-Also-Ask questions Google returns for “fjord cruise bergen”, fifteen are about ocean liners — which line to pick, which ones to avoid, even shipboard slang. That is not the searchers’ fault. Three words genuinely cover both things.
The scale gap is the quickest way to feel the difference. The largest boat in Bergen’s sightseeing fleet carries 297 passengers; the one usually on the Mostraumen run takes 147; one competitor runs boats under 99. AIDAnova carries 5,252 at double occupancy across 183,858 gross tonnes and 337 metres, and MSC Euribia 6,327. One AIDAnova call is roughly twenty-two times the capacity of Bergen’s largest sightseeing boat.
If your ship is calling at Bergen
Ships are generally alongside from about 06:00 to 16:00. The Mostraumen cruise sails at 10:00 year-round with the flagship operator and takes three to three and a half hours; a second operator sails at 10:30 in winter and adds a 09:00 departure in July and August. Do the arithmetic against your own all-aboard time rather than mine, and leave yourself margin. The quay matters too, because the two operators use different ones about 320 metres apart — which quay is which.
Bergen’s port caps arrivals at four ships and 8,000 cruise passengers a day. It has Europe’s largest cruise shore-power facility, able to connect three ships at once, and from 2026 all ships are required to use shore power. In 2025 the port handled 346 calls and more than 680,000 cruise passengers, up 92,000 on 2024.
The rule that is quietly reshaping the World Heritage fjords
This is the genuinely interesting part, and it explains something you may notice on a liner itinerary. Under a new section of Norway’s environmental-safety regulations, laid down by the Norwegian Maritime Authority on 10 April 2025: from 1 January 2026, passenger ships under 10,000 gross tonnes in the five World Heritage fjords must use energy sources producing no direct carbon dioxide or methane. From 1 January 2032 the same applies to ships of 10,000 gross tonnes and above. Shore power is mandatory in those fjords where it exists, and exemptions for small ships without it run two years at a time and never past 31 December 2029.
The five fjords are Nærøyfjorden, Aurlandsfjorden, Geirangerfjorden, Sunnylvsfjorden and Tafjorden. Liners still enter them: Geiranger and Hellesylt took 510,049 cruise passengers in 2024, Flåm allows one ship a day with no length limit, and Gudvangen is anchor-and-tender only. None of it applies to Mostraumen, which is a different fjord system and not on any UNESCO list.
